Tired of seeing the same recycled Skylab material over and over again, space historian Dwight Steven-Boniecki decided to dig deeper. His search through forgotten archives and private collections uncovered historical records unseen and unheard since Skylab’s story began. Audio recordings, documents, video, TV footage, that revealed many more untold stories.

His relentless search through forgotten media and collector's rare gems, led to discoveries that even surprised the astronauts themselves. What Dwight had uncovered, inspired them to open up and share their own stories - the unfiltered truth about what really happened aboard.

What Was Skylab?
Picture this: It's May 14th, 1973. The mighty Saturn V - the towering rocket that carried astronauts to the Moon - roars into the sky, carrying the largest object ever hurled into space: a space station the size of a four-bedroom house. Sixty-three seconds later - DISASTER strikes! The protective heat shield rips off, jamming the solar panels and exposing the station so badly it nearly explodes.
This was Skylab - America's audacious bet that humans would not just visit space, but live and work there for many months at a time. Making Skylab an essential stepping stone for future Mars missions requiring an estimated 1-3 year-long one-way journey as opposed to only a 3-day flight to the Moon. After its dramatic launch, by some miracle, the crippled Skylab made it into orbit, though it was badly burned and heating up dangerously. NASA calculated that it would start melting from within after only 11 days, taking 75% of the entire NASA budget with it.
Was It Successful?
What followed was an extraordinary rescue mission: figure out what was wrong, invent a solution, build it, train the astronauts, and launch them into space to fix it - all within just 11 days! NASA's greatest minds worked around the clock to achieve the impossible. And they succeeded! But the challenges had only just begun. The first crew performed spacewalks no one had ever planned for. In true Apollo 13 fashion, the second crew watched their module's thrusters fly out into space, stranding them on Skylab. A rescue mission was mounted - then canceled when a last-minute solution was found. Together with the final crew, the first to observe a comet from outer space, NASA transformed this wounded giant into humanity's greatest laboratory, after conducting over 1500 experiments, unlocking secrets of the Sun, of Earth, and the very limits of human endurance.
Why Did We Forget It?
Then, in its dramatic fashion, Skylab hurtled back to Earth, raining down its debris onto a small coastal town of Australia with loud supersonic bangs and spectacular explosions. Unbelievably, even that dramatic finale furthered science, giving researchers a much-needed understanding of how objects re-enter Earth's atmosphere. Today, Skylab's remnants can be seen on display at the local Skylab museum or on the shelves of private collectors' homes.
So why did we forget this incredible achievement? And what made their success possible when failure meant certain death 270 miles above Earth?
